General guidelines for searching

The computerized catalog provides information about the library’s holdings and lending status: it includes bibliographic data of the items, their location, and the availability/status of the books.
Searching the library collection can generally be done in two ways: by browsing or by exact search.

Search

• Search terms must be entered with correct diacritics.

• The system does not distinguish between lowercase and uppercase letters; either may be used.

• Articles do not need to be entered, as the system ignores them during searches (e.g. A, AZ, THE, AN, DER).

• When entering search data, simplicity is recommended: in the case of rare surnames, entering the first name is not necessary. For common surnames, adding the first name helps narrow down the number of results.

• If an author has many works in the database, entering the author’s name together with one word from the title will yield more precise results.

Browsing
This search method is used when the exact characteristics of the searched material are not known and only approximate information is available. In such cases, the system does not look for an exact match but lists a specified number of records starting from the one closest to the search term.
